Day 84: Making Bird Houses

Tuesday, 5 January 2016

Day 2 of maker class saw us focus on building with wood and power tools.

I gave the kids this birdhouse plan, one cedar fence picket (which we cut with a mitre saw), a handful of finishing nails, an electric drill with hole saw bits of various sizes, and some sandpaper.

The entire build took about 2 hours, which included learning to use two new power tools: the mitre saw and the electric drill.

For the uninitiated, my school runs a JanTerm for the first three weeks in January in which we teach an all-day immersive course. The classes are encouraged to be interdisciplinary and outside-of-the-box. I’m co-teaching with a math teacher who was similarly-inspired to make when we went to Maker Faire Bay Area last May.
