#180blog Last day of summer school! We took the momentum test, launched rockets, ate ice cream, and gave feedback.

#180blog The kids finished building model rockets and one asked how we’d measure the height it reaches on launch day. So I showed them using the flag pole out back. Also, another asked who would win in a race between Superman and The Flash. That question was probably off topic, though.

#180blog Nothing fancy today: we learned about Conservation of Momentum in the lab. Later, we calculated the mass of Captain America’s shield based on a clip from Winter Soldier. This lab works well to discover conservation of momentum and explore sources of error. Speaking of error, these plastic cars jump the track to much for my liking.

#180blog Today we had a water balloon fight for science! Topic: impulse. Question: hire much force is required to break a water balloon? We used slo-mo video to get impact time from an app called Ubersense. The kid in the video has his phone, filming from ground level, under a plastic bin to keep phone dry.

via Instagram http://ift.tt/1Jxf5BY #180blog I love this demo and the tiny class size means we can treat it like a mini lab. Q1: pick the track that will win a race to the bottom. Q2: pick the track that wins on distance traveled in the air. Prove using conservation of energy why all marbles exit the track at the same speed.
